The cryptic warnings about a “shadowy society” and the “guardians of the secret” still tugged at his mind, a discordant note in the symphony of discovery. He’d scoffed at them, of course. The ramblings of an old woman, perhaps. But what if they weren’t? What if his grandmother had stumbled upon something real, something dangerous? A shiver, unrelated to the attic’s chill, traced its way down his spine. He looked out the small, grimy window. The afternoon sun cast long, distorted shadows across the overgrown garden.
