…As I stood to leave, I noticed something glinting in the grass at the base of the grave. I bent down and picked it up. It was a small, white flower, fresh-picked, with dew still on its petals. There was no one else in the cemetery. No one but me. I smiled, and I tucked the flower into the locket, next to Sarah's photograph. "See you soon, Aunt Sarah," I said. And I walked back to the car, the locket warm against my chest, knowing that this was not an ending, but a beginning. The Southern shadows would always linger, but now I knew they were not all dark. Some of them, I was beginning to understand, were simply the shade of a family tree, waiting to be remembered.
