…Somewhere down there, Elara was fighting. Somewhere down there, her clockwork heart was beating a rhythm only he could hear. "I believe in you," he said to the wind. "More than I ever believed in myself." He turned and walked to the edge of the tower. The drop was a hundred feet into dark, rushing water. The decision was simple, really. Die here, taken by the Guild, or die on his own terms, becoming the ghost he'd promised to be. He chose the water. He fell, the rain swallowing his scream, and the river took him. Above, in the quiet tower, the clockwork heart in Elara's chest throbbed once—a pulse of resonance, of grief, of a promise that would not be broken.
