…Alistair Finch looked up at the stars, dim behind the fog, and made his choice. He would lead the Guild on a chase, buy time for Elara to find the truth. He would vanish into the shadows, become a ghost, a rumor. And when the moment came, he would trust that his journal, his heart, and the girl he'd raised would find each other. He climbed down the fire escape, losing himself in the city's underbelly. The rain began to fall, washing away his footprints. Behind him, in the empty workshop, the clockwork heart he'd tuned to Elara's frequency hummed once, a low and mournful note, as if saying goodbye. And then it, too, fell silent.
