…Then silence. They emerged into a ravine, the stars bright overhead. The desert stretched before them, endless and silent. The obsidian stone pulsed, pointing toward the crescent moon on the horizon. "We have to keep moving," Elias said, his voice ragged. Tasha nodded, but as she took a step, the stone went cold. She stopped, staring at it. "Something's wrong." "What do you mean?" "The stone... it's not pulling anymore. It's pointing back." She turned. At the edge of the ravine, a figure stood silhouetted against the moon. Silas Vane. He raised his pistol, a smile on his lips. "Did you really think you could outrun fate, Tasha?" The shot rang out, and the world went white.
