…The next morning, Tjay learned that Jessica had been in a fight with her sister. A mirror had broken. Jessica had cut her hand on the glass—nothing serious, but enough to need stitches. When Jessica saw Tjay in the hall, she glared. "I heard you were talking about me," she said. "Spreading lies as usual." Tjay didn't answer. She just kept walking, her eyes fixed ahead. Emma fell into step beside her. "You okay?" "No," Tjay admitted. "But I will be." She didn't know if that was true. The shadows seemed to follow her everywhere now. But she had chosen to be real, even when it cost her. And that, she told herself, had to count for something.
