…Tjay’s vision blurred. She saw her mother gripping the counter, tears sliding down her cheeks. Then the vision shifted—through the window behind her mother, she saw a black sedan pull up to the curb. Her heart stopped. “Mom,” she whispered, “he’s here.” The doorbell rang. And Tjay felt the gift surge inside her, showing her what came next: the man breaking through the door, her mother pushing her toward the back, and a face she didn’t recognize—a woman with red hair and green eyes, screaming her name. It was a future she couldn’t stop. But she had to try.
