…The innocence was gone, burned clean away by the search for oblivion. The path I had chosen, initiated by the small, desperate act of seeking quiet in the smoke behind the bleachers, had led me inexorably to the edge of a cliff, where desperation was about to meet the law, and the real walls—concrete, unforgiving walls—were waiting to close in. The descent was complete. Darkness had become my home.
