…He emerged from the tunnel onto a windswept ridge overlooking a vast, unfamiliar landscape. The Eternal City lay behind him, a glittering, monstrous jewel nestled within the surrounding mountains. He could see the distant glint of Emperor Valerius’s guards already beginning their sweep, their metallic armor catching the faint light of the distant sun. Archius took a deep, ragged breath, the air clean and sharp in his lungs. He was free. But as he turned his back on the city, a chilling certainty settled upon him. Emperor Valerius would not easily forget this defiance. The hunt was far from over.
