…“Maya?” a voice called. She recognised it. It was her own voice. The figure stepped into the moonlight. Same face. Same scar above the left eyebrow. Same eyes. But this woman looked at Maya as though she had been waiting seven years to meet her. “You shouldn't have come back,” the stranger said. Maya stumbled away from the box. “Who are you?” The woman glanced at the cassette player. Then she looked directly into Maya's eyes. “I'm the girl who stayed at the river.” The clock on Maya's phone changed. 12:06 a.m. The stranger extended her hand. “Come with me,” she said. “You have one minute to find out which of us vanished.”
