…Ashtin’s eyes lit up. A lookout! That sounded important. And distracting the enemy with blue goo? That sounded like fun! He finally had a role. A real, pirate role. He stumbled towards the sandbox, his blue-splattered form a beacon of accidental heroism. He still didn’t quite understand the intricacies of their pirate game, but he understood the feeling of belonging. He had escaped his parents’ watchful eyes. He had navigated the treacherous terrain of the kitchen and the garage. And in doing so, he had, in his own uniquely disastrous way, become the hero of the hour. He was Ashtin, the messy, blue pirate, and his great escape had, against all odds, been a roaring success.
