…As he carefully cleaned the blood from Johny’s back, his mind raced. The arrow. How could he possibly remove it without causing further damage? He had water, bandages, and a lifetime of experience, but no X-rays, no way to peer inside the delicate landscape of the boy’s insides. The arrowhead’s size, its depth, the extent of the internal trauma—all of it would have to be determined by touch, by instinct honed over years of treating both children and adults in the most desperate of circumstances. He looked at Mark, his expression grim. “Wish me luck,” he said, the words barely a whisper. “I’m going to need it.”
