…He could feel the woman’s worried gaze on him, the man’s steady presence. They were strangers, impossibly strange, but they had stopped. They had seen him. And for the first time since he'd started running, a flicker of something other than pure terror began to stir within him. It was a fragile hope, a tiny ember in the vast darkness of his pain. He closed his eyes, the image of his family a burning ache in his heart, and let the strange, quiet presence of these two people wash over him. He had found help. But what kind of help, and what waited for him beyond this moment, remained a terrifying, unknown mystery.
