…As they walked home that evening, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows, Alex felt a flicker of unease. They had forgotten about Sam. The promise, so strong and clear just hours before, had begun to fade, replaced by the more immediate demands of their existing social life. It was a small oversight, a minor lapse in memory, but as Alex rounded the corner onto their street, a seed of doubt was planted. They had promised. And they had already, in some small way, let someone down. The weight of that promise, which had felt so comfortable earlier, now felt a little heavier, a little more precarious.
