…He grinned, a flash of his true self returning. “Where’s the fun in that?” He pulled out a blunt, rolling it between his fingers with practiced ease. “Guess we’re gonna need something to take the edge off. This whole ‘ancient vampire code’ thing is giving me a goddamn headache.” As he lit the blunt, the familiar scent of cannabis filled the air, a small comfort in the growing darkness. We had a new path, a dangerous one, fraught with unknown perils. But for the first time since we’d made that deal, a sliver of hope, however fragile, had begun to bloom in the desolate landscape of our despair. We were no longer just running. We were fighting. And that, I knew, was a start.
