It fell across the floor like a promise, a thread of gold in the darkness. She whispered to herself, the words barely audible in the silence. “What have I gotten into?” But even as she spoke, she knew the answer. She had gotten into something vast and ancient and terrifying. She had gotten into the heart of a monster who was learning to feel again. And she had no intention of leaving. Not yet. Not ever.
