…He turned and walked away, leaving her alone in the crypt. The stone walls seemed to close in around him as he ascended the stairs, his mind a storm of questions and fears. The sun would rise in a few hours. He would need to find a place to rest, a place where the light could not reach him. But he could not leave her here, unprotected. He did not know if he was her protector or her executioner. He did not know anything anymore. And that, more than the hunger, more than the centuries of solitude, was the thing that frightened him most.
