Her fingers brushed his cheek, and she felt the cold of his skin, the hardness of his jaw. He was real. And he was afraid. Not of her, she realized. Of himself. Of what he was, and what he could not do. "Who are you?" she whispered. He did not answer. He could not. He stood there, frozen, a predator caught in a trap of his own making, and Elara looked into his eyes and saw not a monster, but a soul. A lost, ancient, starving soul. And she was not afraid.
