The first rays of moonlight began to filter through the crack in the ceiling, silver and cold, touching the altar with a ghostly glow. “After tonight,” Valerius said, his voice low and steady, “we will be free.” Elara smiled, and there was no fear in her eyes. “Or we will be together in whatever comes next.” They stood before the altar, their hands clasped, their foreheads touching. The moonlight grew brighter, and the shadows began to stir. The ritual was about to begin.
