The air thickened with the promise of violence. Valerius’s heart—cold, dead, yet somehow still capable of feeling—beat for the woman behind him. He would not let them touch her. He would break his vow, he would drown in blood, he would become the monster they feared, if that was what it took. He stepped forward, shielding her with his body, and spoke the words that sealed his fate. “If you want her, you will have to go through me.”
