…"Elise!" His voice boomed behind me, a command that once would have frozen me in my tracks. "You are making a mistake!" I paused, my hand on the doorknob, but I didn't turn around. The metallic tang in the air seemed to recede, replaced by the faint scent of freedom, sharp and exhilarating. "Perhaps," I said, my voice barely a whisper, but firm. "But it will be my mistake to make." And with that, I opened the door and stepped out of the suffocating embrace of his study, into the vast, unknown expanse of my own potential. The silence that followed my departure was not one of defeat, but of a reckoning. The game had changed. And for the first time, I was playing it on my own terms.
