…These were not the overt threats of my capture. These were whispers, echoes of something buried deep within my own being, something Verdigard’s carefully constructed narrative had failed to silence. He had rescued me, yes. He had reaffirmed his claim. But in his haste to reclaim his prized weapon, he had inadvertently left behind breadcrumbs, leading not back to him, but to a place he desperately wanted me to forget. My own past.
