As she turned and walked away, the heavy door clicking shut behind her, I was left alone with the silence, the scent of lilies, and the locket clutched tight in my hand. A mother's gambit. A sister's help. A past I couldn't remember and a future I couldn't fathom. The weight of manipulation settled upon me, a suffocating cloak. My resolve, once as solid as tempered steel, felt brittle, fractured. I was a pawn, yes, but a pawn that was beginning to understand the board.
