…He was gone then, leaving me alone in the quiet of my room. The city lights glittered outside, indifferent to the storm raging within me. Verdigard’s words, his touch, his reassurances – they were a powerful siren song, luring me back to the safety of the familiar. But the echoes of another voice, the ghost of another touch, lingered, a persistent dissonance in the carefully orchestrated symphony of my life. The cage was still there, I realized. Whether it was made of gilded bars or Verdigard’s embrace, it was a cage nonetheless. And for the first time, the desire to find the key, to break free, burned with a fierce, undeniable intensity.
