…The Man in Black’s lips twitched, a faint, ghost of a smile. “To make you remember, Miles. To make you finally see.” His eyes fluttered closed, and the life drained from them, leaving behind only the vacant stare of death. Justice, in its brutal, messy form, had been served. But as Corbin looked at the lifeless body, at the terrified woman he had saved, and at the shadows that still clung to the edges of the room, he knew that the scars of this case would run deeper than any bullet wound. He had confronted the Man in Black, and in doing so, he had finally confronted himself. The past, it seemed, was never truly buried. It merely waited for its moment to rise from the ashes.
