…"Anya Sharma?" The voice was smooth, confident. "I thought that was you. Marcus Thorne. I saw your application profile—impressive work on the campus marketing campaign. I was hoping we could chat before the dinner." Anya's hand slipped from Ethan's. "Mr. Thorne, what a coincidence. I was just telling my... my friend about your keynote." Marcus's gaze shifted to Ethan, cool and appraising, then back to Anya. "I have a table at the Four Seasons. We could discuss the internship program—and your future in it. I'll have you back in an hour." Anya glanced at Ethan, her expression apologetic but her eyes already alight with opportunity. "Ethan, it's just business. You understand, don't you?"

For a moment, Ethan stood rooted on the sidewalk, Anya’s words echoing in the hush between the streetlights. He saw the glimmer in her eyes—the shimmer of possibility, or was it temptation? Marcus Thorne’s polished confidence seemed to fill the space between them, erasing the memory of a shared meal. It was as if Ethan had become a bystander in his own life, watching the tide of fortune sweep Anya toward a world he could only glimpse from behind glass.

He opened his mouth, searching for some way to hold her here, to remind her of every late night they’d spent poring over cover letters and scholarship forms, the quiet pride in her voice when she first called him sponsor and then, shyly, boyfriend. But the words snagged in his throat, caught between dignity and desperation.

Anya pressed her hand lightly to Ethan’s arm. “Thank you again for dinner. I’ll see you at home?” Her tone was careful, loaded with meaning and equally with the hope that he wouldn’t make a scene.

Marcus was already opening the sedan door, gesturing with a casual authority that made Ethan’s skin prickle. This, he realized, was the divide: a man who commanded rooms and summoned cars, and a man who waited on curbs, watching the people he loved step away from him.

The city roared on. Anya’s heels clicked on the pavement as she slid into the waiting car. Ethan caught her profile for a split second—nervous, determined, beautiful—and then the door closed, cocooning her in leather and ambition. Marcus gave him a swift, appraising nod—more acknowledgment than respect—and followed her inside.

The sedan merged into the stream of taillights, gliding toward the golden promise of the Four Seasons. Ethan let his hand fall to his side, his palm tingling where her touch had lingered. The jasmine-sweet air now tasted flat, and the glow of the restaurant sign cast his shadow long and thin behind him.

For a while, he simply stood there, the city moving around him in careless swirls. He was conscious of the leftover warmth from Anya’s hand, the cool slip of her absence beside him. Was it only hours ago she’d called him brilliant in the lamp-lit hush of their apartment? He wondered if Marcus Thorne had ever needed reassurance, or if men like him simply assumed the future bent to their will.

A bus rumbled past, spattering the curb with dirty rainwater. Ethan’s reflection winked back at him from the darkened window of a passing taxi: tired eyes, a slight slump to his shoulders, the ghost of hope in his jawline. He wanted to believe in Anya’s loyalty, in the kind of romance that outpaces money and charm, but now, all he could feel was the slow drip of doubt, seeping in where her warmth used to be.

His phone buzzed—a calendar reminder, or perhaps a message from Anya. For a heartbeat, he hesitated, thumb hovering over the screen. Then, just as he unlocked it, another message arrived. This one was from an unknown number: a single line that sent an electric chill through his chest.

“Meet me at the rooftop garden. Midnight. Come alone. —A”

The message sat there, urgent and cryptic, a fissure splitting the night wide open.

Ethan looked up at the city, the skyline jagged with light and longing, the possibilities endless and razor-edged. He took a slow, steadying breath. Midnight was only hours away, but already he could feel the shape of the choice tightening around him, shadow and promise tangled in the night.

Behind him, the restaurant door chimed as a group of laughing strangers swept out, oblivious to the crossroads at his feet. Ethan’s pulse hammered. Whatever came next, it would change everything.
