…Despite herself, she let out a tiny breath that might have been a laugh if she’d been less tired. The sound surprised them both. Adrian’s eyes shifted to her mouth for a fraction of a second before returning to her eyes. The room changed. Not dramatically. Just enough. Serena felt it first — the awareness of him in the space, the low heat of his presence, the strange tension that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with the fact that he was looking at her like a problem he intended to keep. That should have scared her. It did. It also did something else. Something small and treacherous. She looked away first.
