…“I said I’m fine.” Adrian’s gaze locked onto hers. “Sit down, Serena.” No title. No distance. Just her name, spoken in that low, level voice. It landed harder than it should have. She didn’t sit. The thunder cracked again, and this time something in her broke open. Her vision blurred. The room tilted violently to one side. She reached for the desk but missed it. The last thing she saw before the floor rushed up to meet her was Adrian’s face changing — all that still control snapping into something immediate and sharp. Then darkness took her.
