…As the Spookyween Detective Agency, with Captain Zoomie’s guidance, helped Penelope pack her cupcakes and the recovered fireworks, a sense of relief washed over them. The mystery of the missing boom was solved, not by a villain, but by a misunderstanding born from a shared love of glittering, celebratory magic. The peculiar perfume had led them not to danger, but to a sweet, sugary revelation, and the Fourth of July was safe once more.

The sun hovered lazily above Maplewood Park, casting dappled light through the old, spreading oaks. All around the town green, families set up picnic blankets, children darted between folding chairs, and the scent of grilling corn drifted on the breeze. Colorful banners flapped from lampposts, and the air buzzed with anticipation: tonight, as always, the Fourth of July fireworks would light up the sky.

But not this year—unless the Spookyween Detective Agency solved the case.

Baby Blue, the smallest and boldest of the three silly puppies, wriggled out from under a red gingham tablecloth. His nose twitched with excitement. Captain Zoomie, their proud and ever-dashing leader, barked orders in his crisp, squeaky voice. "Pups! The fireworks have been found! Let’s get them back to Mr. Sparkle, pronto!"

Pumpkin, whose fluffy orange fur matched her boundless energy, bounced in place. "Let’s go! I can’t wait to see the big booms!"

But Daisy, the wise, slow-moving pup of the trio, cocked her head. "Wait, shouldn’t we check on Mr. Sparkle first? Penelope said she saw him asleep under the tent. What if he’s not just tired? What if he’s… sick?"

Captain Zoomie paused mid-stride. The basket of fireworks, heavier than they expected, rested gently on his sturdy back. The sparkly cupcakes nestled inside another basket, balanced atop Pumpkin’s head with remarkable care.

The four detectives trotted across the grass, weaving between picnic blankets as the chatter of the crowd faded behind them. At the edge of the park, near the tallest oak, a faded striped tent sagged in the breeze. The flap was open. Inside, the late-afternoon sunlight filtered in dust motes that danced atop the wooden tables. And there, slumped in a lawn chair at the far end, was Mr. Sparkle, his sequined jacket glimmering faintly. His head lolled sideways, mouth open. He didn’t stir at the sound of paw steps.

"Mr. Sparkle?" Baby Blue called softly. No answer. Captain Zoomie crept closer, his ears flicked back in concern. The air was tinged with the scent of sugar and something faintly metallic—not quite right.

Pumpkin set down her cupcake basket and tiptoed closer. "Is he… okay?"

Daisy nosed gently at Mr. Sparkle’s shoe. No movement, not even a twitch. Captain Zoomie stepped forward, nose quivering, and nudged Mr. Sparkle’s arm. The man slumped further, a snore escaping his lips—then nothing.

Suddenly, Baby Blue’s sharp eyes caught something glinting near Mr. Sparkle’s hand: a small, empty bottle with a handwritten label. He nudged it out from under the chair. The label read, in loopy script: "For extra sparkle—one drop only!" It looked just like the smaller bottles Penelope used for her glittery cupcakes.

Captain Zoomie’s brow furrowed. "He’s breathing, but he won’t wake up. Did he use too much of Penelope’s glitter? Or was it something else?" He sniffed the bottle, then Mr. Sparkle’s breath. The sweet, honeyed scent lingered, along with an odd, floral note.

Outside, the first strains of music drifted from the bandstand. The sun was slipping lower, painting the sky with red and gold. In minutes, the townsfolk would be waiting for the show to begin. But here, in the quiet tent, the mystery deepened. Was Mr. Sparkle just napping from exhaustion, or was something more mysterious afoot?

As the puppies stared at the sleeping man and the strange bottle, a faint shimmer of blue light glowed beneath his jacket—just for a moment, then gone.

The puppies exchanged worried glances. Something strange was happening, and the Fourth of July celebration hung in the balance…
