I have spent a lifetime as a subject in other people's files a name on a page in a caseworker's ledger, a case number in a judge’s court. They wrote my history with a cold, detached pen, missing the trembling of my hands and the silent promises I made to my brother. I am writing this now to reclaim those pages. I am writing this so my children and grandchildren know where I came from, and so that anyone else currently trapped in the carousel knows that your story doesn't end where the system says it does. I was here. I saw it. I survived it. And because I did, you are not alone.
